Holding Me Down
Oil Paint and Straps on Canvas, 24 x 30 in, 2024
Top Ratchet Strap: As we may all know, ratchet straps are used for tying and holding down items and cargo on a semi truck to transport goods and products across state lines and borders. The same thing goes for medicinal herbs (Marijuana) and how it has traveled everywhere from state to state, city to city, block to block, and hand to hand. It has held down the community positivity through its medicinal use for anxiety, depression, body pains, rest and relaxation, etc. The selling of this herb has held down the seller helping him/her/them make a profit and take care of themselves and their loved ones. The seller respects his/her/their clients and they keep the business going holding each other down positively. Previously that dollar circulation left the black community but as times pass we are seeing a more progressive circulation of the black dollar throughout the black community.
Middle Painting: The use of marijuana has influenced the world but its influence wouldn’t have reached the masses without the help of black and hip hop culture. Because of its popularization it has traveled pretty much all over the world and has reached a point where it is almost grown everywhere medicinally. You could even say hip hop and black culture paved the way for its legalization in a majority of states in the US. The influence in which we have as black people/people of color has been one of the most powerful ways in which we can capitalize on a lot of opportunity because the world does not move without black creativity and influence.
Bottom Ratchet Strap: The Bottom Ratchet Straps represents the negative experiences that have come out of the selling and usage of marijuana such as the wrongful incarceration of those who both sold and used a recreational and medicinal herb that is not harmful to anyone if used in moderation. Especially those of non-violent offenses such as possession or intent to sell. In other cases it has be negatively used as a crutch in times where mental healthcare is not available to those who have dealt with or are currently dealing with multiple cases of trauma, anxiety, depression, etc.
