Duality: Rhythm, The Mother of Cycles

Oil on Canvas, 36 x 48 in, 2025

Rhythm is a word most commonly associated with music, dance, and the beat of our hearts, but its true meaning runs much deeper. In Hermetic philosophy, Rhythm represents the natural cycle of life, ever-changing like the seasons. Understanding this principle can guide us through the journey of life itself. According to The Kybalion, a foundational text written by “The Three Initiates,” the 5th Hermetic Principle states: “Everything flows, out and in; everything has its tides; all things rise and fall; the pendulum-swing manifests in everything; the measure of the swing to the right is the measure of the swing to the left; rhythm compensates.” Once we grasp this concept, we can apply it to all areas of life. Life and death are inseparable, just as the changing seasons are part of a larger, endless rhythm. Grief, though painful, is an essential cycle that teaches us and helps us grow. Without loss, there can be no gain; without failure, we cannot succeed. And without experiencing deep sorrow, we cannot fully appreciate great joy. Just as a painter’s first work is rarely their best, each challenge and hardship shapes us for future triumphs. This principle also reminds us that nothing lasts forever. Just like the waves of the ocean, rhythm moves in cycles—sometimes intense, sometimes calm. Pain and hardship don’t last forever, and joy will return, but only if we allow ourselves to feel and experience the ebb and flow. Life is about embracing the cycles, understanding that there is a time and place for everything, and trusting that each rhythm is part of a larger, purposeful journey.
